Basic Function

Under the direction of the Field Operations Manager and to work in conjunction with the Project Leader and/or assigned Installer; to learn the installation of fire alarm systems, security systems, access control systems, CCTV systems, nurse call systems, paging/intercom systems, and any other system as well as their components determined relevant by Management and other related duties as assigned.

Reports To

All helpers shall report directly to the Project Leader, their assigned Installer, and/or the Field Operations Manager, as well as any other management official when deemed necessary.

Supervises

The Helper I position is non-supervisory.

Hours of Work

The Helper I position shall perform during normal business hours of 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday.  Personnel may be required to work special hours when deemed necessary for specific projects.  Out of town travel as well as overtime hours may also be required.  Within the normal business hours, employees are required to take a one (1) hour lunch break, and may elect to take a total of two (2) fifteen (15) minute breaks, with one being in the morning and one in the afternoon, each business day.

Salary Range

The Helper I position has a minimum salary of $9.00 per hour and a maximum salary of $11.00 per hour.  Overtime rates are in accordance with the guidelines as outlined in the company manual.

Technical Duties & Responsibilities

The major duties and responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

§    Maintain tools and equipment in safe, clean, and orderly condition at project sites and on company issued vehicles

§    Clean and maintain work area, company issued vehicle, and communal warehouse area

§    Gather tools, supplies, and equipment to be used at project site prior to start of each workday

§    Use ladders, scaffolding, and lifts to complete system installation at varying heights

§    Read and interpret project plans and specifications

§    Maintain current installation drawings in order to provide accurate as-built drawings

§    Report any changes to or deviations from the current contract drawings to management personnel in writing

§    Install, renovate, and/or modify wiring in new and existing buildings in a variety of settings

§    Drill holes for system wiring and complete wire installation through the openings

§    Assemble, install, and possibly address system components and devices

§    Inspect, monitor, and verify work performed to assure compliance and completion within appropriate standards and regulations

§    Develop and improve work methods and procedures related to the installation of life safety, security, and communication systems

§    Assume responsibility for work performed

§    Prepare and maintain detailed notes pertaining to the system installation and complete required reports based on these notes

§    Maintain and submit reports as outlined in job description

§    Perform related duties as assigned on an as needed or emergency basis

Reports

All reports must be completed in a neat, orderly, and detailed fashion.  The following reports must be turned in on a weekly basis as required unless noted in parenthesis:

§    Time Sheet

§    Daily Job Log or Work Order Report (Daily)

§    Expense Report

§    Defective Equipment Report (As needed)

§    Vendor Technical Support (As needed)

§    Vacation or Personal Time Request (As needed)

Qualifications

To successfully perform in the Helper I position, an individual must be able to demonstrate satisfactory completion of the Technical Duties and Responsibilities.  The pre-requisites and additional requirements outlined in the items below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and ability required for the position.

Education and Experience

Personnel must have a minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent.

Personnel must successfully complete and/or be enrolled in the following courses with a syllabus approved by management by their first anniversary with Piedmont Sound & Signal:

§    Blue Print Reading

§    Basic Wiring I

Piedmont Sound & Signal will reimburse the employee for the cost of each course upon successful completion with a grade of a B – or higher.  The cost of books and/or course material will not be subject to reimbursement as it will be the employee’s property.

Language Skills

Personnel must posses the ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical manuals, procedures, datasheets, and installation instructions

Mathematical Skills

Personnel must have a basic working knowledge of general math and algebra.

Reasoning Ability

Personnel must possess the ability to define problems, collect supporting data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.  Employees must also be able to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with more than one abstract and/or concrete variable at a time.

Certifications and Licenses

Personnel must hold a valid North Carolina Driver’s License and be listed with the North Carolina Alarm System Licensing Board under Piedmont Sound & Signal’s master license.  In order to maintain their alarm license, an employee must obtain a minimum of three (3) continuing education requirements per year as well as maintain a clean background free of criminal charges. 

Physical Demands

While performing the technical duties of the position, the employee is routinely required to use their hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach distances with hands and arms; climb; and balance.  The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl.  Employees must be able to lift and move up to 100 pounds.  The ability to communicate verbally with other employees on a job site is mandatory.  Specific vision abilities required by the position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of the position, the employee may be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, heights, fumes, airborne particles, outside weather conditions, extreme cold and heat, and vibration.  The noise level in the work environment is typically moderate, but may be high on some projects.

The Installer I position is non-supervisory.  However, installers may be asked to oversee work crews on an as needed basis.

§    Maintain accurate inventory of system related supplies, equipment, tools, and materials required for the assigned trade

§    Schedule equipment and vehicle maintenance in conjunction with management

§    Clean and maintain work area, company issued vehicle, and communal warehouse area

§    Gather tools, supplies, and equipment to be used at project site prior to start of each workday

§    Use ladders, scaffolding, and lifts to complete system installation at varying heights

§    Read and interpret project plans and specifications

§    Maintain current installation drawings in order to provide accurate as-built drawings

§    Report any changes to or deviations from the current contract drawings to management personnel in writing

§    Measure, cut, bend, and install system conduit when necessary

§    Install, renovate, and/or modify wiring in new and existing buildings in a variety of settings

§    Drill holes for system wiring and complete wire installation through the openings

§    Assemble, install, and address system components and devices

§    Troubleshoot wiring and other system devices and components when not operating under normal conditions

§    May be responsible for wiring and connections of the system head-end

§    May complete system programming when deemed necessary

§    May test and certify the system for proper operation, including completion of any reports

§    May work in conjunction with the electrical contractor, architect, engineer, authority having jurisdiction, owner, and/or owner representative in the inspection of the system and obtain signatures indicating system acceptance

§    Inspect, monitor, and verify work performed to assure compliance and completion within appropriate standards and regulations

§    Develop and improve work methods and procedures related to the installation of life safety, security, and communication systems

§    Assume responsibility for work performed

§    Prepare and maintain detailed notes pertaining to the system installation and complete required reports based on these notes

§    Plan, organize, and lay out assigned tasks

§    Train and provide work direction and guidance to subordinates as needed

§    Supervise subordinates when necessary

Qualifications

To successfully perform in the Installer I position, an individual must be able to demonstrate satisfactory completion of the Technical Duties and Responsibilities.  The pre-requisites and additional requirements outlined in the items below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and ability required for the position.

Education and Experience

Personnel must have an Associate’s Degree in a field pertinent to the System Integration Industry from a notable community college or technical school.  A high school diploma, or equivalent, with a minimum of six (6) months related field work experience is also acceptable.

Personnel must successfully complete and/or be enrolled in the following courses with a syllabus approved by management by their first anniversary with Piedmont Sound & Signal:

§    Blue Print Reading

§    Basic Wiring I

§    Basic Wiring II

Piedmont Sound & Signal will reimburse the employee for the cost of each course upon successful completion with a grade of a B – or higher.  The cost of books and/or course material will not be subject to reimbursement as it will be the employee’s property.

Language Skills

Personnel must posses the ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures and manuals, and government regulations and codes.  Individuals must be able to effectively and professionally present information and respond to questions from management, clients, and the general public.  Other skills that may be required include, but are not limited to composing reports, business correspondence, and assisting with the completion of procedure manuals.

Mathematical Skills

Personnel must be able to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference, volume, and voltage calculations on basic algebra, geometry, and physics concepts.

Reasoning Ability

Personnel must possess the ability to define problems, collect supporting data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.  Employees must also be able to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with more than one abstract and/or concrete variable at a time.

Certifications and Licenses

Personnel must hold a valid North Carolina Driver’s License and be listed with the North Carolina Alarm System Licensing Board under Piedmont Sound & Signal’s master license.  In order to maintain their alarm license, an employee must obtain a minimum of three (3) continuing education requirements per year as well as maintain a clean background free of criminal charges.  Manufacturer’s training certifications may also be required for various product lines.

As an Installer I, personnel will be required to obtain NICET Level I Certification within three (3) months of their first anniversary with Piedmont Sound & Signal.
